How Do I Get Rid of Bad Smell in My House?

October 25, 2019 by Lisa McIntyre

Does your house smell as good as it looks? The interior of your home may look welcoming, but bad smell is enough to make your gorgeous home look unappealing.

Household odors are very common, and the reason may or may not be cleanliness. During the changing seasons, lack of aeration, the humidity, and heating can quickly cause rooms to become stuffy or develop a musty smell. And, we cannot forget our pets, who can bring all sorts of weird smells into our homes.

Want to dismiss bad smells once and for all? There’s no need to go buying expensive air fresheners. Check out these handy hacks to help you eliminate all kinds of odors.

Ready to make your home smell fresh? Get Set Started!

Freshen Your Mattress:

  1. If your bedroom looks clean, but smells rotten, the answer could be something a little hidden – your mattress.
  2. To freshen up your mattress in three easy steps:
  3. Sift a cup of bicarbonate of soda onto your mattress.
  4. Leave it to sit for 30 minutes.
  5. Vacuum over your mattress using the brush attachment

Clean Kitchen Sink:

Drains may be out of sight, but they certainly won’t be out of mind once they’ve started to smell bad. Luckily, the solution requires just two ingredients, which you probably already have in your cupboard – vinegar and bicarbonate of soda.

Pour one cup bicarbonate of soda onto the drain, and then follow with two cups of vinegar. Let this bubble away happily for five minutes, then flush repeatedly with very hot water.

Bin Odor Neutralizer

Tacking out the rubbish isn’t a job anyone likes to do – what a stench! We have a great hack to make it much less unpleasant.

Sprinkling bicarbonate of soda or cat litter onto the base of the bin can have a dramatic effect on the way your bin smells. Either of the solutions will work as a bin odour neutraliser by absorbing bad smells and preventing them from escaping out into your lovely, clean home.

Toilet Brush Hack

There’s no avoiding it – toilet brushes are pretty nasty by nature. Keep yours smelling as fresh as can be by squirting some scented cleaner into the bottom of the toilet brush holder. Not only will this keep the brush clean, but if you use something like Flash, it will give the whole room a lovely citrus smell.

Eliminate Washing Machine Mold Smells

The door on front-load washing machines seals so tight that air never circulates inside, allowing mold and mildew to grow-and stink up the laundry room. Wash away the mold and the smell by running a cycle with only two cups of bleach and warm or hot water. Or buy tablets like Affresh (three for $8) that you stick in the washer to clean it. Whichever method you choose, leave your door open between washings.

Remove Cigarette Smoke Stink

For an occasional infraction of someone lighting up in the house, an air freshener and open windows will eliminate the smell. But heavy smoking over a long period requires washing, sealing and painting the walls, Smolka says. It may also require cleaning the duct system. “There’s no magic solution,” he says, but there is misconceptions that clean air machines—also known as air purifiers and ozone machines—are a good solution for getting rid of these types of heavy, ingrained smells. But Smolka recommends against those units; they can produce dangerous levels of ozone that can kill plants, deteriorate rubber and cause eye irritation and other health problems at high concentrations.

Pet Odors:

Your home wouldn’t be the same without your furry friend, but it could probably do without that ‘dog smell,’ right?

If you’ve tried even the most potent washing powder you own to no avail, we could have the answer – white vinegar.

Place half a cup of white vinegar into the fabric softener compartment of your washing machine along with your usual choice of detergent. Post-wash, all traces of dog will be banished…until next time.

Foul Dishwasher Smells

Fill a dishwasher-safe cup with white vinegar, place it on the top rack, and run it through a cycle without any dishes. If you don’t have a safe cup, pour two cups of vinegar into the bottom of the dishwasher. Be prepared for the vinegar to smell for an hour or so, but then all smells will be gone.

If you are facing these unpleasant odors regularly, consider contacting the experts- Dry Effect can help you in fighting from this kind of unusual smell.
